Важную роль в жизни людей в дореволюционный период играло коневодство и все то, что с ним связано. Эта сфера включала в себя множество важных аспектов жизнедеятельности наших предков: спортивных, культурно-развлекательных, экономических, военных и др. Елец и его округа в середине XIX - начале XX вв. были одними из главных мест в России и мире по развитию орловского коневодства. Однако сегодня об этих славных страницах истории г. Ельца практически никто не знает, в том числе и в кругах профессиональных краеведов. В то же время проведение системных исследований по данной проблематике является актуальным как с позиций историографии конного спорта, так и в деле продвижения г. Ельца как туристско-рекреационной зоны. Опираясь на анализ дореволюционного журнала "Русский спорт", периодических изданий г. Ельца начала XX в., научных источников, нам удалось установить вклад елецких коннозаводчиков в развитие орловской рысистой породы, проанализировать бега, проходившие на Елецком ипподроме, по их основным характеристикам, проследить деятельность графа Г.И. Рибопьера на поприще развития рысистого спорта в г. Ельце.
An important role in the lives of people in the pre-revolutionary period played the horse industry and everything that it involves. This sphere includes many important aspects of life of our ancestors: sports, cultural, economic, military and others. Yelets and its districts in the middle of the XIX - early XX centuries were one of the main places in Russia and the world in the development of Orlov horse industry. Today, however, almost no one knows about these glorious pages of the history of Yelets, including the circles of the professional historians. At the same time, the systematic research of this issue is relevant from the point of view of historiography of the equestrian sport, promoting Yelets as a tourist-recreational zone. Based on the analysis of the pre-revolutionary journal "Russian sport", periodicals of Yelets of the beginning of the XX century, scientific sources, we were able to ascertain the contribution of Yelets horse breeders in the development of the Orlov Trotter breed, to analyze the races held on Yelets Racecourse, their main characteristics, to trace the activity of the count G.I. Ribaupierre in the field of development of the trotting sport in Yelets.
