The profession of chiropractic originated in Davenport, Iowa in 1895, when Daniel David Palmer formulated the theory of the spinal subluxation, and pioneered the process of adjusting the spine to correct nerve interference caused by misaligned vertebrae.

Chiropractic is the large non-invasive health care profession in the world and is the third of all health care professions ranking immediately after medicine and dentistry.

According to the council on Chiropractic education "the application of science in Chiropractic concerns itself with the relationship between structure, promarily the spine, and function, promarily coordinated by the nervous sytem of the human body as that relationship affects the restortion and preservation of health. Further, this application of science in chiropractic focuses on the inherent ability of the body to heal without the use of drugs or surgery".

Chiropractic is concerned with adjustment the spine to free it from subluxations. Subluxation is defined as "any alterations of the biomechanical and physiological dynamics of contiguous spinal structures which cause neurological disturbances". An adjustment is a chiropractic procedure done by hand to correct a misaligned vertebrae.

In education, the council on chiropractic Education is the officially recognized chiropractic accrediting agency from the U.S.Department of Education. There are 16 accredited Chiropractic Colleges in the USA with a total enrollment of about 14,000 students. The typical chiropractic curriculum covers abour 5112 hours of instructions including about 888 hours of clinical chiropractic training. To be admitted to Chiropractic college candidate must have a minimum of two years of pre-professional college education with a curriculum concentrated in basic and biological sciences, the chiropractic degree program includes four years of resident instruction at a chiropractic cillege.
